Sunrise from the roof of a jeep
This is the departure for anyone who wants the volcano at dawn without the two hours of scoria that usually come with it. A driver collects you in the dark, the road climbs the flank, and you are parked facing east with a hot drink before the light arrives. The operator puts the viewpoint at about 1,360 metres.
What you give up is the 1,717-metre summit itself, and it is worth being clear about that: no road on this mountain reaches the top. What you gain is a morning that a two-year-old, a grandparent and a bad knee can all share.
No hiking at any point
A classic Suzuki 4WD carries you to the sunrise viewpoint and back down again.
Only your group in the jeep
The listing runs as a private tour, so the vehicle and the driver are not shared.
Breakfast on the roof
A light breakfast, a hot drink and mineral water, eaten sitting on the jeep as the sky changes.
The 1963 black lava field
The route runs out across the flow left by the last major eruption, six decades on and still bare.
Children from two years old
Infants travel on a lap, which makes this the family answer to a mountain that asks for moderate fitness.
The 1963 lava field, after the light comes up
Once the sun is properly up the jeep drops off the viewpoint and runs out onto the black lava field — the flow from the 1963 eruption, coarse black rock and sand with almost nothing growing on it. It is the part of the morning most people did not know they were booking, and it is the reason a jeep exists on this mountain at all: nothing else crosses that ground.
Ten ways to build the morning
The listing carries ten grades, and they change what happens after sunrise rather than the sunrise itself. Beyond the lava field you can add a soak at the hot springs, an ATV circuit, a rafting run, a waterfall or brunch; there is a grade that drops the hotel transfer if you are staying in the caldera, an admission-only grade, and one that adds a hike to the summit for anyone who changes their mind.
The combination grade is the quiet answer to the whole jeep-or-trek question. It drives you up and walks you to the top — the jeep-or-trek guide sets out who that suits.
Who this jeep morning suits, and who should choose the trek instead
Book this one if…
Families with young children, travellers who would rather not climb in the dark, anyone with knees or a back that object, and photographers who want to arrive rested. A mt batur sunrise hike tour of this kind is also the sensible choice on a short trip, because it costs you a morning rather than a day.
Book something else if…
Anyone whose reason for coming is the summit marker at 1,717 metres, the crater rim walk or the eggs cooked in the steam vents. None of those is on a jeep route — the sunrise hike reaches all three for $33.

Know before you go
- The jeep does not reach the summit. It reaches a viewpoint the operator puts at about 1,360 metres. If the marker at the top is the point of the trip, book a trek.
- It is open and it is cold. You are sitting on a roof at altitude before dawn. Bring a jacket; the blankets some drivers carry are not guaranteed.
- Children ride on laps. The age band starts at two, and infants are seated with a parent rather than in a child seat.
- Add-ons are grades, not extras. Hot springs, ATV, rafting and the waterfall are chosen at checkout and priced there.
- Two people are needed to run it. A solo traveller should look at the shared jeep departures instead.
- The track is rough by design. This listing excludes travellers with back problems, and the ride out to the lava field is the reason.
What travellers say about this jeep tour
Kadek drove the jeep and took our photographs; Mel collected us from the hotel and drove us back from the mountain base. Simple, and quietly magical.
Elvinas B. · Solo traveller · October 2025
Properly chilly after the heat of the coast, in the best way. The hot spring was crowded, but the sunrise made up for it.
Kartik M. · Couple · October 2025
Our guide Dira went out of her way to make our Mount Batur morning something else. The sunrise was beautiful and the whole trip ran without a hitch.
Michael B. · Honeymoon · October 2025
I did not enjoy my morning. We had paid for the waterfall and skipped it to finish early; I would look for another way up next time.
April W. · Solo traveller · June 2025
Pickup and drop-off ran to the minute. Kadek was full of information on the way up and the view from the top was worth the alarm.

Frequently asked questions
Does the jeep go to the top of Mount Batur?
No. It climbs to a sunrise viewpoint on the flank that the operator puts at about 1,360 metres, then runs out to the black lava field. There is no road to the 1,717-metre summit, and no listing here claims otherwise.
Is this really a private tour?
Yes — the listing is flagged private, so only your group travels in the jeep. You will still share the viewpoint with everyone else who came up that morning, because there is one place to watch the sun rise.
Can we add the summit hike?
Yes. One of the grades on this listing combines the jeep with a hike to the summit. If you would rather walk the whole way with a licensed trekking guide, the sunrise hike and hot spring tour is the better fit.
Is it suitable for young children?
The age band starts at two and infants travel on a lap, which makes it the most child-friendly departure here. Bring warm layers for them: it is properly cold on an open jeep before dawn.
What is the black lava field?
The flow left by the 1963 eruption, on the flank below the viewpoint. It is coarse black rock and sand, still almost bare six decades later, and the jeep drives out across it after sunrise.
Which areas does the pickup cover?
Seminyak, Kuta, Legian, Canggu, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Sanur, Sidemen, Candidasa and Ubud, with times from 02:15 to 03:20. There is also a grade without the transfer for anyone already staying in the caldera.
