Mount Batur Tours Reviews
Travellers who have walked up this volcano in the dark and travellers who drove up instead, in their own words. The critical ones are here too, because a summit in cloud is a real outcome and worth knowing about before you fix a date.
Ratings below are the operators’ own figures from their booking listings, not ours. Every departure they describe is compared on mt batur sunrise hike tour, and the experience page sets out what the morning involves. Practical questions are answered on the FAQs.
What travellers say, format by format
At 52 I found the climb well within reach — you want a basic level of fitness and nothing more — and the guide was thoughtful the whole way up. I would recommend it to anyone.
Patrick H. · Couple · April 2026 · Sunrise trek
Steep, and about ninety minutes to the top; not easy if you do not hike. Our guide handed us bananas for the monkeys and boiled an egg in the volcano's steam.
Alan L. · Solo traveller · October 2025 · Sunrise trek
Two miles of near-constant uphill in the dark. The guide let us stop whenever we needed and took a stack of photographs at the top.
Anika R. · Friends · June 2026 · Sunrise trek
Shared departure, but only one other traveller with us, and the guide knew how to slip past the crowd. The hot spring afterwards was a good addition, if busy.
Eren K. · Couple · August 2026 · Sunrise trek
Walking up in the dark is not for the faint-hearted: two hours each way with some scrambling. Our guide was patient and kept everyone safe.
Paula C. · Family · December 2025 · Sunrise trek
A gentle sunrise hike for us, and we were lucky with clear weather in the middle of the rainy season. Well worth the early start.
Albert K. · Couple · January 2026 · Sunrise trek
Kadek drove the jeep and took our photographs; Mel collected us from the hotel and drove us back from the mountain base. Simple, and quietly magical.
Elvinas B. · Solo traveller · October 2025 · Jeep, no hiking
Properly chilly after the heat of the coast, in the best way. The hot spring was crowded, but the sunrise made up for it.
Kartik M. · Couple · October 2025 · Jeep, no hiking
Our guide Dira went out of her way to make our honeymoon morning something else. The sunrise was beautiful and the whole trip ran without a hitch.
Michael B. · Honeymoon · October 2025 · Jeep, no hiking
I did not enjoy my morning. We had paid for the waterfall and skipped it to finish early; I would look for another way up next time.
April W. · Solo traveller · June 2025 · Jeep, no hiking
Pickup and drop-off ran to the minute. Kadek was full of information on the way up and the view from the top was worth the alarm.
Grace J. · Friends · May 2025 · Jeep, no hiking
Agus explained the whole morning, remembered our dietary requirements at breakfast, drove carefully and filmed the lot. He was mindful about our dietary needs and kept the drive safe and good fun.
Mihir P. · Family · June 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
Martin knew where to go to avoid the crowd and kept us entertained on the drive up. He clearly loves the mountain, and it made the morning.
Muskaan C. · Friends · July 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
Agus and Putra looked after us properly, blankets and all, and made sure we got the most out of the morning. They took so many photographs for us.
Nicola C. · Couple · July 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
Do not underestimate the climb: even the short trek from the jeep is 35 to 45 minutes of steep rock, and a clear sunrise is never guaranteed. We were lucky.
Daniel P. · Couple · June 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
First full day in Bali. The jeep driver explained the black lava and took the best photographs of our trip.
Gabriella F. · Friends · April 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
Jejou found us a good spot and gave us plenty of time before the sun came up. An experienced driver on a road I would not want to drive myself.
Ajith J. · Couple · May 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
Well over a hundred people watching the pre-dawn light together, which was stranger and better than I expected. Every photograph was taken by my guide.
Philip G. · Solo traveller · June 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
Nobody came on the morning, and I only learned my booking had been refunded when I asked. The tour company never told me.
Colleen M. · Solo traveller · June 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
Arman answered all our questions about Bali and his own culture on the way up, and his enthusiasm for the job showed. We would happily do it again.
Alaina S. · Couple · March 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
The hot springs and the coffee tasting rounded the morning off. Gustu and Dibya were good company.
Kelly A. · Friends · April 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
An aggressive climb, worth the effort, and there is a motorbike option halfway if you need it. Our driver told stories the whole way north.
Benson Y. · Couple · April 2026 · Sunrise trek
Wali offered to carry our bags while already carrying the breakfast, and takes genuinely creative photographs. He clearly cares whether you are all right on the way up.
Kasinta K. · Friends · January 2026 · Sunrise trek
A tough climb for an inexperienced hiker like me. Joe helped every step and the view was worth all of it.
Mia B. · Solo traveller · December 2023 · Sunrise trek
The two-hour drive from Seminyak was worth it. Gustu was friendly and informative and the driver arrived early.
Toni S. · Couple · February 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
It rained all day and we missed the sunrise entirely. Both drivers were polite and considerate regardless, which counted for something.
Roxy C. · Couple · January 2025 · Jeep, no hiking
Our driver Kavit told us how the village of Batur was before the eruption, and took lovely pictures at the top. He was good company for the whole drive.
Kitti B. · Family · September 2024 · Jeep, no hiking
Coming down felt like skiing on gravel. Otherwise it ran smoothly from pickup to drop-off.
Dennice W. · Solo traveller · October 2023 · Trek + hot springs
Steeper and harder than I expected. The guides held my hand over the rocky parts and one of them carried my bag.
Christina K. · Solo traveller · August 2026 · Trek or jeep
Cloudy at the top, then the cloud cleared and the view from the summit was worth the wait. Ade was a good guide.
Sarah R. · Couple · August 2026 · Trek or jeep
Two hours up and two hours down — not for beginners. The guides and the driver were the best part.
Christopher T. · Friends · July 2026 · Trek or jeep
After a rough descent the hot spring felt right, though it was crowded and the changing area is shared. The hike itself was steep and well worth it for the view.
Ross G. · Family · August 2026 · Trek or jeep
An early start but worth it. Bring extra layers, because the early morning is properly chilly at that height.
Brittany D. · Couple · July 2026 · Trek or jeep
Picked up at 1:30 exactly. I told the guide I was feeling under the weather and he set the pace to me for the rest of the climb.
Edward B. · Solo traveller · February 2025 · Sunrise trek
Jata held my pace and we were up in about an hour, with a good spot and a proper breakfast waiting for the sunrise. The driver arrived exactly on time.
Koen K. · Solo traveller · October 2023 · Sunrise trek
Cloudy on top, but walking up in the dark was its own reward. I am of moderate fitness and simply took a little longer than the others.
Lakmi R. · Couple · April 2024 · Sunrise trek
Not for beginners, and dress warmly, because it gets properly cold on the mountain before the sun. The view once you are up is worth it.
Yasmeen R. · Solo traveller · May 2026 · Sunrise trek
Ubud pickup at 2:30, an hour's drive, then a hut for the last toilet stop before the climb. Easy to arrange, and the guide was on time.
Jervenne O. · Couple · June 2023 · Sunrise trek
Thick fog on our morning and no view at all, and it was still a good few hours. Nobody controls the weather.
Michael C. · Couple · June 2022 · Sunrise trek
The jeeps were fun and the sunrise was worth the early start. We were told we had one hour at the hot spring because of the return taxi, which was less than we expected.
Robert A. · Family · May 2025 · Jeep + hot springs
Doling was attentive and an excellent photographer. I would ask for him again.
Ashvin N. · Couple · May 2025 · Jeep + hot springs
Ideal if you want to avoid the crowd or the 2am alarm. Cloudy for us, but the views over the lake were there and Kuas checked on us at every step.
Mike J. · Couple · July 2026 · Sunset trek
The hike is hard, so be ready. I hike all the time at home and still struggled: an hour and a half to two hours up, steep and slippery, almost scrambling in places.
Julie G. · Solo traveller · October 2024 · Sunset trek
Only about fifteen other people at the top. I would take the sunset over the sunrise every time.
Andrea B. · Couple · October 2024 · Sunset trek
Yus cooked for us on the mountain and showed us the temple at the top, then took the photographs on the way down. Our driver Ketut looked after us just as well.
Neha P. · Friends · November 2025 · Sunset trek
Genuinely almost all downhill, on quiet roads and well-kept bikes. The coffee plantation and the tasting on the way were the surprise of the day.
Scott F. · Couple · February 2026 · Cycling, caldera view
Scenery, culture, fresh air and a good lunch. Easy riding, and our guide explained Balinese life as we went.
Lucie S. · Family · July 2026 · Cycling, caldera view
Eddie put safety first and taught us more about Balinese culture than the rest of the trip put together. His English was excellent and we had a lot of fun.
Bridget T. · Couple · March 2026 · Cycling, caldera view
Steep shale in the dark wearing head lamps, and you need to be fit. Water is supplied and you will need it. We are in our mid-seventies and manage fine.
Mike L. · Couple · August 2026 · Trek or jeep
Loose gravel gets slippery on the descent; otherwise not that hard. The trip was well organised, the driver was on time, and the view is worth every step.
Sean Z. · Solo traveller · August 2026 · Trek or jeep
A family of four with two teenagers, plus the hot springs afterwards. Smooth from the first message to the drop-off.
Rachael P. · Family · August 2026 · Trek or jeep
Five children with us, and the motorbike option up and down saved the smallest legs for a small extra fee. Dress warmly for the top.
Yasmin A. · Family · August 2026 · Trek or jeep
Gede's feeling for Bali came through at every stop, and the day was well organised from the start. We would ask for him again.
Anthony V. · Couple · April 2026 · Jeep, no hiking
Private transfers, a fast boat and two drivers who knew the island and were kind with it. I saw every place I had hoped to.
Lucy F. · Solo traveller · June 2026 · Day trip, another island

What comes up again and again
- The climb is steeper than people expect. Regular hikers and first-timers alike describe two hours of loose scoria, and several mention the descent as the harder half.
- Guides carry the morning. Named guides appear in review after review — the ones who set the pace to the slowest walker, carry a bag that is not theirs and take the photographs nobody else can take.
- Cloud is the lottery. Some travellers describe a clear dawn over Agung; others climbed into fog and saw nothing. Both wrote afterwards that they were glad they went.
- The hot springs get busy. Travellers who add the soak enjoy it and say so, and also say the changing rooms are shared and the pools fill after sunrise.
