Visiting Mount Batur: Fees, Guides and How the Morning Works
Nobody sells a ticket to climb Mount Batur, and nothing publishes an opening time. What exists instead is a guides’ association on the trail, and a gate on the caldera road. Your pickup comes for you somewhere between one and half past three in the morning. Here is how an ascent actually comes together.
There is no ticket booth on the mountain
The trail up Mount Batur has no window selling admission at three in the morning. The two fees a fare does not cover
The Kintamani area charge is set by Bangli Regency under its Regional Regulation 5 of 2023: IDR 25,000 for Indonesian visitors, IDR 50,000 for foreign visitors and IDR 10,000 with a Bali identity card. It is collected on Jalan Raya Penelokan between 08:00 and 17:00, which is why a tour bus climbing at two in the morning passes straight through. The regency has said it will move to an online one-gate system, with trials from mid-2026.
The second is the Bali tourist levy: IDR 150,000 per international visitor, paid once per trip through the provincial government’s own Love Bali portal under Bali Regulation 2 of 2025. It applies to your whole stay on the island and has nothing to do with the volcano.
Pay the levy before you fly. The official portal is lovebali.baliprov.go.id and it issues a QR voucher you show on arrival. Lookalike sites charge more for the same thing.
Why every trek here comes with a guide
The trail is managed by the local trekking guides’ association, and every climbing departure listed here includes a licensed guide in the fare. One operator puts it plainly on its own listing: the summit cannot be walked without one. In practice the guide is also the person carrying the head torch, the poles and your breakfast, and the one who knows which line up the scoria is firm.

What the climb asks of you
The walk gains about 700 metres on loose volcanic scoria and takes roughly two hours up and ninety minutes down. Listings ask for moderate fitness rather than experience, and walkers in their mid-seventies finish it. Several who hike regularly still describe it as steeper than they expected, particularly on the descent, where the gravel moves under you.

Ages, health and who should book the jeep instead
Minimum ages run from 2 on one jeep listing to 18 on one trek, with most treks setting between 5 and 15. Nearly every trek excludes pregnancy, back problems and heart conditions, and two listings note that travellers should not climb during menstruation, a local custom on a mountain that is treated as sacred.
If any of that rules you out, the morning is still open to you. The jeep departures carry infants on laps and need no walking, and they watch the same sunrise from the same side of the mountain.
What to bring at three in the morning
- Wear: closed shoes with grip, long trousers and a jacket you can put on at the top. It is cold on the rim before dawn and every second review says so.
- Bring: a small bag, water beyond the bottle provided, cash for tips, and sunblock for the descent when the light comes up hard.
- Leave: anything heavy. One operator asks you to bring your own toilet paper, because there is a hut at the base and nothing on the trail.
