Six ways to book one sunrise

What makes this the most-booked departure on the mountain is not the climb but the menu behind it. The same operator sells the hike, a jeep grade for anyone who would rather not walk, and three finishes — hot spring, waterfall or jungle swing — on the same listing. You choose at checkout, and the price moves with the grade.

That flexibility is the reason to start here if you are booking for more than one person and not everybody wants the same morning. A couple can split across the hike and the jeep grade and still watch the sun come up from the same mountain.

Six packages, one booking

Hike, jeep, hot spring, waterfall or jungle swing — the grade you pick at checkout decides how the morning ends.

The summit for a 06:00 sunrise

The climb starts at 03:45 and puts you on the crater rim with time to spare before the light.

Breakfast at the top

A banana sandwich, egg, fruit, biscuits and a hot chocolate, carried up and handed out on the rim.

Hot springs with the kit included

The spring package covers the ticket, a locker, a towel, soap and a changing room on the lake shore.

Pickup from Uluwatu to Amed

Seven named zones with published times, from 01:00 in the far south to 02:00 in Ubud.

Your climb, 03:45 to 08:30

The night runs to a published timetable, and the operator sets it out hour by hour rather than leaving it to the driver. The walk itself gains around 700 metres on loose volcanic scoria, by the light of the head torch you are handed at the base.

  1. 01:00 – 03:00 — hotel pickup, earliest in Uluwatu and Nusa Dua, latest in Ubud and Sidemen
  2. 03:30 — arrival at the trekking starting point and a short briefing with your guide
  3. 03:45 — the hike begins, single file, with the guide setting the pace to the slowest walker
  4. 06:00 — the summit for sunrise, and breakfast on the rim
  5. 07:00 — the descent begins, slower than the climb because the gravel moves
  6. 08:30 — back at the base point
  7. 09:00 — optional hot spring on the shore of Lake Batur
  8. 10:00 — optional coffee plantation stop, then the drive home by early afternoon

Breakfast on the crater rim

Breakfast is carried up and eaten at the top while the light comes: a banana sandwich, a hard-boiled egg, seasonal fruit, biscuits and a hot chocolate, tea or coffee. It arrives when everyone is cold and has stopped moving, which is exactly when it is wanted. Long-tailed macaques work the summit at the same hour and are entirely unbothered by you.

Who this trek suits, and who should choose the jeep instead

Book this one if…

Walkers of ordinary fitness who want the 1,717-metre summit and the crater rim, and who like the idea of choosing the finish. It also suits a group that cannot agree: the mount batur sunrise hike tour listed here include this operator’s own jeep grade on the same booking.

Book something else if…

Anyone who cannot manage two hours of steep, loose ground in the dark, or who is travelling with children under fifteen on the adult band. The private jeep on the Mount Batur Jeep Adventure reaches the sunrise without any walking at all, and takes children from two.

Where you are collected, and when

Pickup times are published by zone rather than negotiated: Uluwatu, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua at 01:00; Seminyak, Kuta and Canggu at 01:15; Sanur at 01:45; Ubud and Sidemen at 02:00; Amed and Candidasa at 01:15. Be in the lobby ten minutes before your time. If you are already staying in the caldera there is a no-transfer grade that meets you at the base camp near Songan instead — the starting points page has the address.

Know before you go

  • The minimum age is five. Under-fives can come only in a parent’s care, and the trek is not built for them.
  • Moderate fitness is the requirement. Not experience. If you walk regularly you will finish; if you have a heart condition, back trouble or are pregnant, this listing excludes you and the jeep grade is the answer.
  • It is cold on the rim. You climb warm and then stand still at 1,717 metres. Carry a jacket in your bag rather than wearing it up.
  • The descent is the harder half. Loose scoria moves under you in daylight. Take the pole the guide offers even if you did not want one going up.
  • Weather can take the view. This departure refunds only if the operator cancels. Book toward the dry season and keep the 24-hour window open.
  • Pick your finish at checkout. The hot spring, waterfall and swing are separate grades, not add-ons you can buy at the base camp.

Frequently asked questions

Does this booking include the hot springs?

Only if you choose the hot-spring grade at checkout. That grade includes the entrance, a locker, a towel, soap and a changing room. The plain trekking grade finishes at the base and drives you home.

Can I book the jeep instead of the hike on this listing?

Yes. The same operator sells a jeep sunrise grade on this booking, which drives to a viewpoint on the flank with no walking. If you want a private jeep rather than a shared one, the Mount Batur Jeep Adventure runs for your group only from $21.

How fit do I need to be?

Fit enough for two hours of uphill on loose ground, and ninety minutes back down. Guides set the pace to the slowest person in the group and stop when anyone needs to. On some mornings a local rider will carry you part of the way for a small fee agreed on the mountain.

What time will I be back at my hotel?

Early afternoon on the packages with a hot spring or coffee stop, and late morning on the plain trekking grade. The published timetable puts you back at the base point at 08:30 and home between 11:00 and 13:00.

Is breakfast really cooked in the volcano?

Eggs are boiled in the steam vents near the summit on several departures here. This one carries breakfast up to the rim: a banana sandwich, egg, fruit, biscuits and a hot drink. Fumaroles leak warm gas through the rock at that height, and the guides use them.

What happens if the summit is in cloud?

The departure runs and there is no refund for weather you can see through. If the operator cancels for weather you are offered another date or your money back, and you can cancel yourself up to 24 hours before for a full refund.

Climb it, then soak in the springs
