Where the springs are, and why they are there
The pools sit at Toya Bungkah on the western shore of the lake, directly below the cone. The same volcanic system that leaks steam through the rock near the summit heats groundwater at the bottom, which is why a mountain you climbed in the cold ends in warm water an hour later. The village name means, roughly, water from the rocks.

Compare every Mount Batur tour with hot springs
The two extremes are worth knowing. One jeep departure schedules two full hours at the springs inside a ten-hour day; on another the stop ran to one hour because the return transfer was waiting. If the soak is the reason you are booking, read the listing’s own itinerary rather than assuming.
Is it worth adding after a 5am summit?
Do the arithmetic before you decide. A hot-spring package adds roughly two hours to a day that started at one in the morning, and puts you back at your hotel in the early afternoon rather than late morning. Against that: your legs have just come down 700 metres of loose scoria, and the pools look across the lake at the mountain you were standing on.
Most people who add it are glad they did. The one drawback is the company: the pools fill after sunrise, and the changing rooms are shared.
Choose the package at checkout. On most listings the springs are a tour grade with its own price, not something you can decide on the morning. Booking the plain grade and hoping to add it at the base camp is how people end up watching from the car park.
Going without a tour
The springs are open to anyone who drives to Toya Bungkah, and there is more than one operation on that shore. Because entry prices at the door move and are set by each resort, check the current rate with them directly rather than trusting a figure on a travel page. Are the hot springs included?
Only on the hot-spring packages, where the ticket comes with a towel, a locker and a changing room. On other listings it is an optional grade chosen at checkout, and on some it is not offered at all.
How long does a Mount Batur tour take?
Six to ten hours door to door, and most of that is driving. Two to six hours are spent on the volcano itself depending on the format, and the shortest listing here is a six-hour trek from Ubud.
