Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking Tours

A Mount Batur sunrise trekking tour is a two-hour walk in the dark that ends on the rim of an active volcano at first light. Seven departures here do it, all with a licensed guide, and the differences between them are pickup, group size and what waits at the bottom.

What a sunrise trekking tour of Mount Batur actually is

You walk up in the dark. A driver collects you between one and three in the morning, drops you at a base camp above Songan at about a quarter past three, and a licensed guide hands you a head torch and a walking pole. You then climb roughly 700 metres of loose volcanic scoria and reach the crater rim in about two hours.

Breakfast is carried up and eaten on the rim as the light arrives, and on several departures the eggs are cooked in the volcano’s own steam vents. The descent takes about ninety minutes and most people find it the harder half.

Why choose a sunrise trek

The 1,717-metre summit

You reach the marker in the black sand that no vehicle on this mountain can get to.

The crater rim path

After breakfast the guide walks the group along the rim of the active crater, which almost nobody knows is included.

Eggs in the steam vents

Fumaroles near the top cook your breakfast. It sounds like a gimmick until you watch it happen.

A guide who knows the ground

Every trek here includes one, and on loose scoria in the dark that is not a formality.

Sunrise trekking vs the jeep tour

Both watch the same sun come up from the same side of the same volcano. What differs is the three hours in the middle and what you stand on at the end.

Compare every Mount Batur tour

If two hours of uphill in the dark sounds like the point, this is your format. If it sounds like the opposite of a holiday, jeep tours start at $20.

What you get, and what you do not

Every trek here includes a licensed guide, the trekking and entrance fees, breakfast with a hot drink and a transfer from its listed zones. Most add a walking pole, a head torch and bottled water; some add a raincoat.

What you do not get is any guarantee about the view. Cloud sits on the rim on plenty of mornings and no fare refunds it. Tips are excluded from every listing, and the hot springs are a separate grade rather than an extra you can add on the morning.

Planning a sunrise trek

Expect a fare between $25 and $53, and expect where you sleep to matter more than which operator you pick. From Ubud you are collected between 02:00 and 03:30; from the southern beaches, from 01:15.

Wear closed shoes with grip and carry a jacket you can put on at the top. The listings ask for moderate fitness rather than experience, and they exclude pregnancy, back problems and heart conditions. Minimum ages run from five to eighteen — the visiting page sets out which listing sets which.

Who should choose something else

If you cannot manage two hours of steep, loose ground before dawn, this is not the format to book and there is no shame in saying so at the point of paying rather than at four in the morning on a hillside. The same goes if you are travelling with children under the age bands, or if pregnancy, a back problem or a heart condition puts you outside what the listings allow.

The answer in all of those cases is the same: a jeep tour from $20 reaches the sunrise, the caldera and the lava field with no walking at all. It is a different morning, not a lesser one.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the Mount Batur sunrise trek?

About two hours up on loose volcanic scoria and ninety minutes down. No technical skill is needed and guides set the pace to the slowest walker, but the surface moves under you and regular hikers still find it steeper than expected.

Do I need a guide?

Yes, and every trekking departure here includes one. The trail is managed by the local guides' association, and one operator states on its listing that the summit cannot be hiked without a guide.

How much is a Mount Batur trekking tour?

From $25 per person for a shared departure to $53 for a private all-inclusive trek with hot springs. Private transport and add-on grades account for the spread.

What time does the climb start?

About 03:30 from the base camp, which puts you on the crater rim comfortably before the 06:00 sunrise. Hotel pickup runs from 01:00 to 03:00 depending on your area.

What should I wear?

Closed shoes with grip, long trousers and a jacket you can carry rather than wear on the way up. It is cold standing still at 1,717 metres before dawn, and every second review says so.

Is there an age limit?

Each listing sets its own. Minimum ages across the trekking departures here run from five to eighteen, so check the card against your group before you book.

Can I add the hot springs afterwards?

On some listings, as a grade chosen at checkout. One trekking departure includes ninety minutes at the springs; others carry no hot-spring option at all.
