How to Get to Mount Batur from Ubud, Seminyak and Kuta

Mount Batur sits in the Kintamani highlands, about an hour north of Ubud and two hours from the southern beaches. That distance is the whole reason pickup happens in the middle of the night, and it is the first thing to check before you book.

Pickup times by area, from the listings themselves

Operators publish their own pickup windows and they cluster tightly by distance. The further south you sleep, the earlier the driver comes.

Where you are stayingTypical pickupNotes
Uluwatu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua01:00 – 01:40Several operators exclude Uluwatu or charge extra

Lovina, Tabanan, Karangasem, SingarajaExcluded or surcharged on most listings

Windows as published by the operators on their own listings. Your exact time is confirmed by the operator, usually the evening before.

Ubud is the shortest night. An hour to the trailhead against two from the coast means an extra ninety minutes in bed and the same sunrise. If your dates are flexible, a night in Ubud before a Batur morning is the single easiest change you can make.

From Ubud — about an hour

The road runs north through Tegallalang and Tampaksiring and climbs steadily onto the caldera rim. Pickup is between 02:00 and 03:30 on the treks, and every departure listed here collects in Ubud without a surcharge. You reach the base camp in time for a briefing at about 03:15.

From Seminyak, Canggu and Kuta — about two hours

Expect a 01:15 to 02:30 pickup and a drive of roughly two hours, most of it asleep. The same road serves Legian and Denpasar, with Sanur joining it slightly later.

From the far corners — who charges extra

Distance is where the fine print lives. Individual listings exclude pickup from Uluwatu, Amed, Lovina, Tabanan, Karangasem, Singaraja and one specific street near the mountain; others carry an extra charge for Uluwatu, Candidasa, Amed and Lovina. The exclusions are on each card, and they are the most common reason a booking has to be changed after the fact.

Check your area against the card before you pay. If your hotel is outside a listing’s pickup zone the operator may cancel or ask for a surcharge on the day. The starting points page gives the base-camp addresses if you would rather make your own way there and meet the guide.

Driving yourself: the gate on the Penelokan road

You can drive into the caldera without a tour, and plenty of people do it for the viewpoints alone. Jalan Raya Penelokan carries a Kintamani area charge collected between 08:00 and 17:00 under Bangli Regional Regulation 5 of 2023: IDR 25,000 for Indonesian visitors, IDR 50,000 for foreign visitors, IDR 10,000 with a Bali identity card. Five collection points sit along the road, including one by the geopark museum.

The regency has said the manual booths will be replaced by an online one-gate system, with trials from around July 2026. A pre-dawn tour vehicle passes through before the booths open, which is why the fee never appears on most fares.

Every departure listed includes the transfer from its stated pickup zones, and the fee at the gate with it.

Staying in the caldera instead

Kintamani, Songan and Toya Bungkah all have places to stay on or below the rim, and a bed up there turns a two-hour drive into a fifteen-minute one. Several listings offer a no-transfer grade at a lower price for exactly that reason, and one sets its Kintamani-area pickup at 03:00 rather than the small hours.
