What you are actually booking
Mount Batur is an active volcano of 1,717 metres in the Kintamani highlands of Bali, and it is the one most visitors climb. There is no gate on the trail, no window selling admission at three in the morning, and nothing publishes opening hours. What you buy is a place on a departure run by a licensed operator, and the trekking fee, the entrance fee and the guide come inside that price.
Two facts catch people out, and both are worth knowing before you pay. The first is that the summit cannot be walked without a guide: the trail is managed by the local trekking association and every departure includes one. The second is that no jeep reaches the top. What sits inside a fare, and what you pay separately.
The Kintamani charge sits under Bangli Regional Regulation 5 of 2023 and is collected on the Penelokan road in daylight, which is why a tour vehicle climbing at two in the morning never meets it. What time you will be collected
Pickup time is a function of distance, and the published windows cluster tightly. Uluwatu, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua go first, from 01:00. Seminyak, Kuta, Legian and Canggu follow between 01:15 and 02:30. Sanur runs from 01:45, and Ubud last at 02:00 to 03:30 because it is only an hour away.

The climb, if you walk
The trail starts near Songan on the north-east side and gains about 700 metres of loose volcanic scoria. Groups leave the base camp at around 03:30 by head torch and reach the rim in roughly two hours, which puts you in place well before the 06:00 sunrise. The descent takes about ninety minutes and is the half most people find harder, because the gravel moves under you in daylight.

The jeep, if you ride
A jeep morning removes the climb entirely. A classic Suzuki 4WD carries your group up the flank road in the dark, parks facing east, and breakfast is served on the roof while the sky changes. Afterwards the route runs out onto the black lava field left by the 1963 eruption.
It is the answer for families, for anyone with knees that object, and for a short trip where a whole day cannot be spared. Children travel from age two on one listing. A plain trek from Ubud can have you home by late morning; a jeep morning with two hours in the hot springs will not return you until the early afternoon.
Whether you will see anything
This is the honest weak point and no operator can fix it. Cloud sits on the rim on plenty of mornings, particularly between November and March, and a departure that runs into fog is a departure that ran — there is no refund for weather you can see through.
