What every fare includes, whatever you pay
Before comparing prices it is worth knowing what none of them charges extra for. Every volcano departure here includes the entrance and trekking fees, a guide or driver, breakfast with a hot drink, and a transfer from its listed pickup zones. Every one of them refunds in full up to 24 hours before departure.
On the treks the fare also covers the equipment: a head torch, a walking pole and, on some, a raincoat and bottled water. That is why a $25 trek is not a stripped-back version of a $45 one — the difference lies elsewhere.
What moves the price: your pickup zone
This is the largest single factor. A departure collecting in Ubud drives an hour each way; the same departure collecting in Uluwatu drives more than two, at one in the morning, and the fare reflects it. Several operators exclude the far corners entirely — Uluwatu, Amed, Lovina, Tabanan, Karangasem and Singaraja appear on exclusion lists across the sheet — and others add a surcharge.
If your dates are flexible, one night in Ubud is worth more than any discount you will find: it buys ninety minutes of sleep and often a cheaper grade. Getting there lists the published windows by area.
What moves the price: private or shared
Less than you would expect, and not always in the direction you expect. A private jeep here starts at $21 and undercuts a shared jeep at $39, because the vehicle is small and the operator's costs are in the transfer rather than the seat. On the treks the private premium is real: $45 against $25 for a shared departure of similar length.
What matters more than the word is the group cap, which runs from four to a hundred across these listings. A shared trek capped at five behaves almost exactly like a private one — the private-versus-group post works through the trade.
What moves the price: hot springs, waterfalls and ATVs
Add-ons are sold as tour grades rather than extras, which means they are priced at checkout and cannot be bought on the morning. The hot springs appear on six departures; one gives you two hours and another ninety minutes. Beyond that the jeep listings carry ATV circuits, rafting runs, waterfalls, a jungle swing and cafe stops.

The two fees no fare covers
The Kintamani area charge applies to anyone driving into the caldera between 08:00 and 17:00: IDR 25,000 for Indonesian visitors, IDR 50,000 for foreign visitors, under Bangli Regional Regulation 5 of 2023. Pre-dawn tour vehicles pass before the booths open, which is why it appears on only one listing here — the one that itemises IDR 50,000 on its no-transfer grade.
The Bali tourist levy is IDR 150,000 per international visitor, paid once per trip through the provincial government's own portal under Bali Regulation 2 of 2025. It covers your whole stay on the island and has nothing to do with the volcano, but it is money you will spend and it belongs in the budget.
Is the cheapest jeep the best value?
At $20, the cheapest jeep departure includes parking, all entrance fees, a guide and driver, mineral water, breakfast, a hot drink and hotel transfer across south Bali and Ubud. Four hours are spent on the volcano. It is difficult to argue with that arithmetic, and it holds a 5.0 rating across more than fifteen hundred reviews.
What it does not do is climb. If the summit marker is the point of the trip, the cheapest relevant fare is a trek at $25, and the extra five dollars buys a completely different morning.
Is the $53 trek worth it?
The most expensive volcano departure here is a private all-inclusive trek with hot springs, running ten hours with private transport throughout. Against a $25 shared trek you are paying $28 more for private transfers, the hot-spring ticket and a group that consists only of you.
Whether that is worth it depends on one question: is anybody in your party likely to be slower than the group? If yes, the private pace is the whole value. If no, the same money spread across two people buys very little that the shared departure does not already include.
There is a middle answer that most people miss. Several shared departures cap at five, ten or fifteen travellers rather than thirty or a hundred, and a trek capped at five behaves almost exactly like a private one for around half the fare. Read the cap on the card rather than the word in the title.
What about tips?
Every departure here excludes gratuities and most say so explicitly. There is no expected percentage, and nobody will chase you. What is worth knowing is what the job involves: guides carry breakfast up 700 metres in the dark, set the pace to whoever is struggling, and take the photographs that end up on your phone.
Carry small notes. There is no cash machine at the base camp and nowhere on the mountain takes a card.
The same applies to the motorbike lift some travellers take partway up or down. It is arranged on the trail with the local riders, agreed in cash on the spot, and appears on no listing. Travellers who used it describe it as the best money they spent that morning, so having a few notes on you keeps the option open.
Where the real savings are
- Sleep closer. A night in Ubud or the caldera unlocks the no-transfer grades, which are the cheapest on several listings.
- Book the format, not the extras. The sunrise is identical from every departure; the add-ons are where the price runs away.
- Travel as two. Six listings need two travellers to run, and several price by group rather than per head.
- Skip the hot springs if you are tired. It adds two hours to a day that started at one in the morning.
Reading a fare before you pay
Nearly every listing here sells several grades under one product, and the grade is where the price actually lives. The names are the operators' own and they are not standardised, but they follow patterns worth recognising.
- Without hotel transfer. The cheapest grade on several listings. It expects you at the base camp under your own steam, which only makes sense if you are already in the caldera.
- Joined-in. A shared vehicle or group, against the private grade on the same listing. Usually the biggest single saving available.
- Admission only. One jeep listing sells this: the ride, with no transfer and no extras.
- Plus hot spring, plus waterfall, plus ATV. The add-on grades. Each adds both money and hours to the day.
Read the grade before the headline price. Two listings advertising the same figure can mean very different mornings once the grade is chosen at checkout.
Who should pay more than they planned
Three groups, and each for a good reason. Anyone with a slow walker in the party should buy the private pace. Anyone staying in Uluwatu, Amed or Lovina should pay the surcharge rather than hunting for the cheapest listing that excludes them. And anyone whose trip has exactly one clear morning in it should take the departure with the longest time on the mountain rather than the cheapest fare.
